Multi-component sensors

Future trend in sensor technology: more precision for industry

The demand for sensors in industry is constantly increasing, as more and more machines and systems are expected to manufacture products autonomously, safely and to a high quality. Primosensor has been meeting the growing demand for force transducers and static torque sensors for years by continuously expanding its product portfolio and customizing series products – precisely tailored to the customer’s requirements.
As industrial processes become increasingly automated, robots and manipulators are increasingly being used to make recurring processes reproducible and as error-free as possible. If the use goes beyond “pick and place” applications and requires interaction with a counterpart, the robot needs a sensitive measuring element. This provides feedback on the forces and torques it exerts on its environment. This is where multi-component sensors are used.

Future trend in sensor technology: more precision for industry

Multi-component sensors detect forces and torques in the three spatial directions (x, y, z) and are therefore also referred to as 6-axis force-torque sensors. Mounted on the robot head, they give the robot a kind of “sense of touch.” This allows processes such as joining, embossing, or deburring to be precisely programmed and executed. This significantly expands the possible applications of robots.

Primosensor sets new standards in multi-component sensor technology

Primosensor has been offering its own series of 6-axis force/torque sensors since 2025 – with an approach that clearly sets us apart from other suppliers.

On the one hand, Primosensor deliberately dispenses with the use of highly sensitive semiconductor strain gauges. This eliminates the need for complex temperature compensation. Instead, newly developed, high-precision thin-film strain gauges are used, which offer excellent sensitivity combined with high stability.

On the other hand, Primosensor has developed a process in recent years with which multi-component sensors can be automatically calibrated using robots – a globally unique approach!

The sensor to be tested is mounted above a reference sensor in a “test cell”. Calibration is performed automatically within defined limits for forces and torques. The reference sensors are calibrated externally on a hexapod-based, six-component force standard measuring device, which is itself traceable to the national standard.
